Chinese Lion Dance in Silver Spring, MD

Silver Spring and neighboring Wheaton sit directly east of Kensington, and their diverse dining and retail scene has been part of our performing life for decades. Downtown Silver Spring's Ellsworth Drive and Veterans Plaza host public festivals and openings, while Wheaton's restaurant rows along Georgia Avenue and University Boulevard include many Chinese and Southeast Asian businesses that call us for opening blessings and New Year visits.

Lion dance and Silver Spring’s community

Silver Spring is one of the most diverse communities in Maryland, and audiences here include Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Ethiopian, Latin American and long-time Maryland families side by side. A lion dance here is both a Chinese tradition and a shared neighborhood celebration. Our school's own history is rooted in this part of the county: Grandmaster Sifu Tai Yim opened his first Hung Fut school in Wheaton in 1979, and the Kensington school that houses the team today is a few minutes away.

Getting the lion to Silver Spring

Silver Spring and Wheaton are reached from our school by Georgia Avenue, University Boulevard or Beach Drive, so travel is short and we can schedule performances close together. Downtown Silver Spring has public garages; Wheaton strip centers usually have surface parking near the door. Events on Veterans Plaza or other county property may require a permit or coordination with the venue's management, which the host arranges.

Do you perform at Silver Spring festivals and outdoor events?

Yes. We perform outdoors at street festivals, plaza celebrations, school field days and shopping-center events throughout Silver Spring and Wheaton. Outdoor performances need a level, dry surface and a place for the drum and cymbals. In hot or rainy weather we may adjust the length or move under cover, because the performers inside the lion work hard.

Can you perform for a Wheaton restaurant on Lunar New Year day itself?

We try to. The first day of the Lunar New Year and the following weekend are our busiest dates of the year, and we schedule Wheaton and Silver Spring businesses in a route so we can reach as many as possible. Reserve early to secure a time on the day itself; nearby dates are often available with more flexibility.
